This year Nik and I again teamed up for what is probably my favorite Christmas tradition with the Porter's. Gingerbread houses. It's pretty amazing that Kathi actually makes all the gingerbread parts and icing by hand. This time around I was enlisted to cut out a few houses- I was quite scared that I would break them on accident and basically ruin Christmas. Every year the master builder aka Nate creates some architectural masterpiece. Just last year he made an amazingly perfect log cabin out of pretzels and even cut up a picture of the family to stick in the back window. So the only way that Nik and I can even begin to compete with that is by crafting some story/theme to pull the house together. Last year that meant we did Goldilocks and the Three Bears- the cinnamon bears on hand were very convenient. We even had a yellow sour patch kid (Goldilocks) chilling in the house.
This Christmas we continued the fairy tale tribute and did the Three Little Pigs. Since we didn't have enough time/gingerbread to make three separate houses- we dedicated each side of the house to a different building material:
Straw
Sticks
Brick

And the piece de resistance--- the wolf attempting to climb down the lifesaver chimney. Molding animals out of Tootsie Rolls isn't as hard as you would think. And this lovely specimen earned me the title of "The Wolfmaker".
Nik and I are already crafting plans for next year (it may involve a tower and some hair made from banana runts)... Merry Christmas!!!

I read it on my phone last night and had to take a closer look at the houses tonight. Yikes... thats a lot of effort. I know a lot of people willing to go to that length to have an excuse to eat sugar but they are usually diabetics. Looks Great, Mom was impressed. Love you guys. Merry Christmas. Art and Fam
ReplyDeleteHa ha you put our house to shame...actually we put our "gram cracker house" to shame...your mom and I decided to "help" Addy make one and well we did not reinforce the house enough because right at I said lets take a picture the whole thing collapsed inward because we used store bought whipped frosting...sooo sad...all our hard work...Ha ha ha..it was fun teaming up with your mom though...she has been helping us paint our house which has been a mess of fun! miss you guys and hope you have an amazing Christmas!
